Uttarakhand Government Raises Stipend for MBBS Interns

The Uttarakhand state government has announced a significant increase in the monthly stipend for MBBS interns, raising it from ₹17,000 to ₹25,000. This adjustment means that interns will now receive an additional ₹8,000 each month.

This decision was made during a cabinet meeting led by Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, aimed at supporting medical students during their internships at the state's five government medical colleges.

New Stipend Amount

With the new stipend of ₹25,000, MBBS interns will benefit from a direct increase of ₹8,000. This internship period is essential for medical students as they gain practical experience and clinical training in hospitals. The enhanced stipend is intended to provide financial assistance during this critical phase of their education.

Applicable Medical Colleges

The increased stipend will be applicable to students interning at five government medical colleges located in Srinagar, Haldwani, Dehradun, Haridwar, and Almora, where MBBS and postgraduate medical courses are offered.

Response to Interns' Requests

MBBS interns in Uttarakhand had previously requested a stipend increase to ₹30,000, while postgraduate resident doctors sought ₹1 lakh. The cabinet's decision to raise the stipend to ₹25,000 reflects the interns' demands and the stipend rates in other states.

Cabinet Meeting Insights

According to Banshidhar Tiwari, the State Director General of Information, the cabinet meeting resulted in the approval of the stipend increase. Additionally, a proposal related to the Sports Policy 2021 was also approved, which includes provisions for offering 'out-of-turn' employment to athletes who achieve success in national and international competitions. This will involve filling 243 positions across various departments, including Sports, Youth Welfare, Home, Transport, Education, and Forest.
