To enhance the integrity of its examination process and eliminate fraudulent activities, the UPSC has announced the implementation of a face recognition system across all its examination venues.


The UPSC oversees some of the most esteemed and competitive exams in India, attracting millions of aspirants annually. Many candidates aspire to secure positions in prestigious services such as the Indian Administrative Service (IAS), Indian Police Service (IPS), and Indian Foreign Service (IFS). Therefore, it is essential to ensure that only eligible candidates take the exams, thereby preventing any form of malpractice.


Purpose of Face Recognition Implementation

The UPSC organizes numerous significant recruitment exams each year, with participation from candidates nationwide. Previously, identity verification relied mainly on documents and ID cards. However, officials assert that the new face recognition system will enhance the security and reliability of this process. The primary aim is to confirm that the individual taking the exam is indeed the one who registered, effectively preventing impersonation and ensuring that no one else can take the exam on behalf of another. This advancement will also bolster candidates' confidence in the recruitment process while minimizing manual checks, making the identification process more automated and efficient.


How Face Recognition Technology Operates

The face recognition system is powered by artificial intelligence. The procedure is straightforward: when candidates apply for the UPSC exam, they upload a photograph. On exam day, candidates will position themselves in front of a camera at the entrance. The system will compare the live image with the one submitted during registration. If the images correspond, the candidate will gain entry to the examination hall. This entire verification process is completed in approximately 8-10 seconds without any manual assistance. Officials have indicated that the system is designed to operate efficiently under typical exam conditions, ensuring candidates do not experience long wait times.


Pilot Testing and Results

Prior to the full-scale rollout of this system, the UPSC conducted a pilot project during the NDA and CDS examinations. This trial took place at selected centers in Gurugram on September 14, 2025. During the pilot, live images of candidates were digitally matched with the photographs submitted in their applications, with the verification process taking only 8-10 seconds. The results indicated enhancements in both security and the entry process, prompting the commission to adopt this technology for all UPSC recruitment exams.


Preparation for Candidates on Exam Day

With the introduction of mandatory face recognition, candidates should be aware of several important points. The photograph uploaded during registration must closely resemble the candidate's actual appearance. Additionally, candidates should bring essential documents, including their ID and admit card, as they did previously. They will need to stand in front of the camera at the entry point to complete the verification process. It is crucial for the examination center to ensure that both the cameras and internet connectivity are functioning properly to prevent any delays.
