IISc Bengaluru Tops Times Higher Education Rankings 2027

The Indian Institute of Science (IISc) in Bengaluru has achieved the top position among Indian institutions in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2027, securing a global rank of 254. This year, India boasts 143 universities in the rankings, marking a significant increase. IISc excelled particularly in the 'Research Environment' category, scoring 98.0 points. Other notable institutions include Saveetha Institute and Shoolini University. The rankings reflect a growing trend of Asian universities surpassing their European counterparts, with 1,003 Asian universities listed this year. The University of Oxford continues to hold the top global position.
 

IISc Bengaluru Achieves Top Rank in National University Rankings



The Indian Institute of Science (IISc) in Bengaluru has been recognized as the leading institution in India according to the Times Higher Education World University Rankings for 2027, achieving a global rank of 254.


This prestigious institution has consistently been a frontrunner in higher education and has now secured the top position among Indian universities. Previously, IISc was categorized within the 201–250 range, but this year marks its first specific global ranking of 254. The 2027 rankings include a total of 2,297 universities from 118 countries and regions, with India notably having 143 universities listed—an increase of 15 from last year. For the second year in a row, India has the highest number of ranked universities in Asia.


IISc scored an overall 57.0 in the rankings, excelling particularly in the 'Research Environment' category with an impressive score of 98.0. The institute also achieved scores of 62.1 in 'Teaching' and 58.6 in 'Research Quality'. The rankings assess universities based on various criteria, including teaching quality, research environment, research excellence, international outlook, and industry collaboration.


Other Notable Indian Institutions in the Rankings

Following IISc, the Saveetha Institute of Medical and Technical Sciences ranked second among Indian institutions, falling within the 326–350 global band. Shoolini University of Biotechnology and Management Sciences ranked in the 451–500 band. Additionally, Jamia Millia Islamia and KIIT University both secured positions in the 501-550 band. Notably, Saveetha improved its ranking from the 351-400 band to the 326-350 band, while KIIT advanced from the 601-800 band to the 501-550 band. In contrast, Jamia's ranking dropped from the 401-500 band to the 501-550 band this year.


A remarkable trend in the World University Rankings 2027 is the performance of Asian universities. For the first time, the number of ranked universities in Asia has surpassed that of Europe, with 1,003 Asian universities included in this year's rankings, up from 929 last year.


Top Global Universities

Moreover, 40 Asian universities have made it to the global top 200, an increase of five from the previous year. Tsinghua University in China has climbed to the 11th position, making it the highest-ranked university in Asia, followed by Peking University at 13th and the National University of Singapore in the top 15. Other notable rankings include Japan's University of Tokyo at 27th, the University of Hong Kong at 33rd, and South Korea's Seoul National University at 56th.


On a global scale, the University of Oxford has maintained its position at the top for the 11th consecutive year, with MIT in second place. Princeton University and Stanford University are tied for third, while the University of Cambridge rounds out the top five.
