Central Sanskrit University Launches B.Tech in AI and Data Science
Introduction to the New Program
Central Sanskrit University has unveiled a new B.Tech program focusing on Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Data Science, aiming to merge modern technology with traditional Indian values. This innovative course is set to begin at the Nashik campus in the academic year 2026-27. The primary goal is to train students in advanced technologies while emphasizing the use of AI for the conservation of Indian languages, ancient texts, and cultural heritage.
Approval and Significance
The program has received the green light from the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), marking it as one of the first engineering courses introduced by a Sanskrit university.
Utilizing AI for Cultural Preservation
**Preserving Ancient Texts with AI**
India is home to millions of manuscripts in Sanskrit and other ancient languages, many of which remain undigitized. This new curriculum will equip students with the skills to employ AI for reading and translating these historical documents, creating digital archives, and protecting essential information, thereby contributing significantly to the preservation of India's rich cultural heritage.
Curriculum Overview
**Subjects to be Taught**
The B.Tech program will accommodate 66 students, including 60 regular and 6 additional seats. The curriculum will cover various subjects such as Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Data Science, Python programming, Cloud Computing, Deep Learning, and Statistics. Furthermore, students will receive training in contemporary technologies like Natural Language Processing (NLP), Speech Recognition, Conversational AI, Computational Linguistics, and Optical Character Recognition (OCR) specifically designed for ancient manuscripts.
Integration of Tradition and Modern Skills
**Focus on Both Indian Knowledge Tradition and Career**
This course will blend AI with traditional Indian knowledge areas, including Ayurveda, Yoga, Astrology (Jyotish), Vastu, and Nyaya. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has praised this initiative, highlighting its potential to equip youth with modern technical skills while keeping them connected to their cultural roots. With the increasing demand for skilled professionals in the expanding AI industry, this program promises not only to enhance career prospects for students but also to play a crucial role in safeguarding Indian languages and ancient wisdom.
