Agniveer Exit Plan: Ensuring Future Employment for Soldiers
Agniveer New Exit Strategy
Significant Developments for Agniveers: Important updates have surfaced regarding the future of Agniveers enlisted in the Army through the Agnipath initiative. The Central Government is taking proactive measures to secure the futures of Agniveers even before their four-year service period concludes. As per sources from the Ministry of Defence, a new exit strategy has been formulated to ensure that Agniveers will not face challenges in securing employment after their tenure in the Army. The goal is to facilitate permanent job placements in the Army, paramilitary forces, police, or other government sectors prior to the end of their service term.
First Batch Discharge Timeline
First Batch to Conclude in January 2027:
The inaugural group of Agniveers, who joined under the Agnipath scheme, is set to complete their four-year term in January 2027. This cohort includes over 19,000 Agniveers, recruited on January 1, 2023, and is approaching the end of their service. Consequently, the government has established a new framework for their rehabilitation and job placement.
Permanent Appointments for 25% of Agniveers
Retention and Merit List:
Sources from the Ministry of Defence indicate that a merit list for 25% of Agniveers who will be retained in the Army will be published before their service period ends. The evaluation and examination process will be conducted internally within the Army. The merit list will be compiled based on this assessment, allowing selected Agniveers to transition directly into the regular cadre.
Initially, the plan involved discharging all Agniveers first and then re-recruiting 25% of them. This approach has now been revised to ensure that chosen Agniveers can move into permanent roles without any interruption.
Employment Opportunities for Remaining Agniveers
Plans for the Remaining 75%:
The government has also created a distinct plan for the 75% of Agniveers who will not be retained in the Army. Strategies are in place to secure employment for them in paramilitary forces, police departments, and other government roles. The Ministry of Home Affairs will oversee this recruitment process through a dedicated portal, aiming to ensure that Agniveers have their next government job lined up before their four-year term concludes.
Major Opportunities in Security Forces
Reservation in Paramilitary Forces:
The government has made provisions for reserving positions for ex-Agniveers in various security forces. A 50% reservation will be allocated for Constable and Rifleman roles in the BSF, CRPF, CISF, ITBP, and Assam Rifles. Additionally, exemptions will be granted to ex-Agniveers in certain recruitment processes, including written tests, Physical Standard Tests (PST), and Physical Efficiency Tests (PET).
Reservation in Railways and Other Departments
Railway Job Reservations:
Ex-Agniveers will also benefit from reservations within the Indian Railways. They will receive a 5% horizontal reservation for Railway positions in Category-2 and above, while a 10% horizontal reservation is set for Category-1 posts. Furthermore, both the central and state governments have implemented systems to prioritize and reserve positions for ex-Agniveers across their respective departments.
Government's Objective
Ensuring Job Security:
The primary aim of this new government initiative is to guarantee that when an Agniveer completes their four-year service and departs from the Army, they already possess an appointment letter for a new government position. This means they will not need to search for employment again, ensuring their career remains secure immediately after their service ends.
Agnipath Scheme Rules
Retention Policy:
According to the Agnipath scheme's regulations, only 25% of Agniveers from each batch will be retained in the Army's regular cadre after their four-year service, while the remaining 75% will be discharged. The government's new exit strategy aims to provide timely employment opportunities for these discharged Agniveers and facilitate their rehabilitation.
