CBSE Class 10 Passing Criteria Remains Unchanged for 2026-27 Academic Year
CBSE Confirms No Changes to Class 10 Passing Criteria
The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has announced that the passing criteria for Class 10 will not change for the academic year 2026-27. Students are required to achieve a minimum of 33% marks, which can be obtained by combining their scores from board exams and internal assessments.
This decision is reassuring for students preparing for the CBSE board exams in 2027. The board has confirmed that the passing criteria will remain consistent, allowing students to combine their board exam and internal assessment scores to meet the 33% requirement. Therefore, it is not necessary to achieve 33% in both the 80-mark board exam and the 20-mark internal assessment separately.
There was some confusion among students, educators, and schools regarding the passing criteria as outlined in the secondary school curriculum for 2026-27. The document suggested that students must secure at least 33% in both the external examination and internal assessment, leading to inquiries from teachers and schools for clarification. This topic was also discussed during a CBSE webinar, where a teacher from Sonipat, Haryana, sought clarification on the passing rules.
Continuity of the 80-20 Assessment Pattern
CBSE has reiterated that the assessment structure for Class 10 will follow the 80-20 pattern, where the board examination accounts for 80 marks and internal assessment for 20 marks. The final subject result will be calculated by aggregating both scores. This means that if a student scores below 33% in the board exam, they will not automatically fail, as internal assessment marks will also contribute to the overall score. However, students must complete both the board exams and internal assessments.
The passing criteria for Class 10 in the 2026-27 academic year will mirror those of the previous year, 2025-26. This indicates that students are not required to achieve 33% in each component separately. In contrast, Class 12 has distinct passing rules for practical and theory components. Although there were discussions about introducing a separate 33% passing requirement for Class 10, this proposal has been retracted, and the existing rules will remain in effect.
No Changes to Exam Pattern
In addition to the passing criteria, CBSE has confirmed that there will be no alterations to the exam pattern or paper design for the 2026-27 academic session. The board has also developed sample question papers and marking schemes for Classes 10 and 12, which can assist students in understanding the exam format, mark distribution, and syllabus. CBSE has encouraged schools and educators to utilize these resources for effective teaching and exam preparation.
