IIT Roorkee's Stance on Admission Requirements

With the announcement of the JEE Advanced 2026 results, numerous students are now turning their attention to the admission procedures for IITs and NITs. In light of ongoing discussions surrounding CBSE results, re-evaluations, and grading, there were calls for leniency regarding the mandatory 75% marks requirement for Class 12 to qualify for IIT admissions this year. However, IIT Roorkee has firmly stated that there will be no adjustments to this eligibility criterion, meaning students must comply with the established rules for admission into IITs and NITs.

Reasons Behind the Demand for Relaxation

The demand for a relaxation of the 75% rule emerged after the JEE Advanced 2026 results were released, as many students and their families expressed concerns over lower-than-expected Class 12 scores. Additionally, numerous students are still awaiting the results of the CBSE re-evaluation process. This situation led to discussions about potentially lowering or temporarily waiving the 75% eligibility requirement for this year, but IIT Roorkee has made it clear that such changes will not occur.

Official Statement from IIT Roorkee

In a statement to a news agency, IIT Roorkee explained that students from 36 different educational boards across India participate in the JEE admission process. Therefore, it would be inappropriate to modify the rules based on issues related to a single board. The institute emphasized that the 75% eligibility criterion was established and communicated as early as December, making it impractical to change the rules during the admission process.

Admission Rules Overview

Merely qualifying in JEE Main or JEE Advanced does not guarantee admission to IITs, NITs, or other centrally funded technical institutions. Candidates must achieve at least 75% in their Class 12 board exams or rank within the top 20 percentile of their respective boards. While there are relaxations for candidates from reserved categories, the 75% requirement remains mandatory for those in the general category.

Previous Year Setbacks

IIT Roorkee pointed out that last year, several candidates who excelled in the JEE exam were unable to gain admission to IITs or NITs due to not meeting the minimum Class 12 marks requirement. The institute asserts that this rule is uniformly applicable to all students, and thus, it cannot be altered this year due to specific circumstances.

Communication with CBSE

IIT Roorkee has indicated that it is in ongoing communication with the CBSE. The institute recognizes the challenges faced by affected students and is prioritizing efforts to address these issues. If any student encounters problems related to re-evaluation or other procedures, the institute will work with the relevant agencies to provide assistance.
