IIIT Introduces Pioneering B.Tech Honors Degree to Foster Research and Innovation
IIIT B.Tech Honors Degree Launch
IIIT B.Tech Honors Degree: The Indian Institute of Information Technology (IIIT) has made a significant advancement in research-oriented education by launching its inaugural B.Tech Honors degree. This initiative, approved by the Institute's Senate, aims to enhance innovation, academic excellence, and advanced learning, starting with students admitted in the current academic year for the 2025 batch.
Encouraging Research and Innovation
Honors Degree to Promote Research and Innovation
With the newly established framework, IIIT will provide a B.Tech Honors with Research, specifically designed to motivate students to engage in research and innovation throughout their undergraduate journey. However, this Honors degree will not be automatically granted to all; only those who fulfill stringent academic and research standards will qualify.
Eligibility Requirements for Honors
To be eligible, students must not have failed any subjects in any semester and must have filed at least one patent during their studies. These criteria ensure that the Honors title is awarded to students who consistently perform well academically and contribute to meaningful research.
Additional Credits for Honors Degree
Extra Credits Mandatory for Honors
While the standard B.Tech program requires 160 credits, those pursuing an Honors degree must complete an additional 12 credits. These extra credits will be distributed across semesters, beginning from the third semester, with students needing to earn three additional credits each semester until the seventh semester.
New Pathways: Honors Basket and Honors by Research
Two New Options: Honors Basket and Honors by Research
According to Prof. Pawan Chakraborty, Dean of Academics, IIIT has introduced two structured pathways: "Honors Basket" and "Honors by Research." Under the "Honors Basket" option, students can achieve an Honors degree by completing 12 additional credits in advanced subjects pertinent to their branches. These specialized courses will be available from the third to the seventh semester, enabling students to deepen their subject knowledge.
Research-Focused Pathway
For those inclined towards research, the Honors by Research pathway will emphasize research-oriented courses, projects, and tangible outputs like research publications or patents. Recognition in this category will depend on the quality and impact of the research conducted during the Honors program.
Admission Criteria for the Honors Program
Eligibility Criteria for the Honors Program
Admission into the Honors program will be competitive and based on performance. Students must secure a minimum CGPA of 8 (equivalent to 80 percent) by the end of the second semester and should not have any backlogs when applying for the Honors track.
Department-Specific Honors Baskets
Department-Wise Honors Baskets
Honors degrees will be conferred based on various baskets offered by different departments at IIIT. Each department will curate its own advanced courses and research components to ensure academic relevance and rigor. To uphold high standards, the Institute has also revised existing rules and regulations accordingly.
