CBSE Introduces Skill Education for Grades 6 to 8 in Affiliated Schools
CBSE's New Initiative for Skill Education
The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has announced a significant change in its educational framework. Starting now, students from grades 6 to 8 in CBSE-affiliated institutions will be mandated to receive skill education. This initiative aims to enhance practical learning alongside traditional assessments.
The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has created specialized textbooks to support this skill education program.
Let's delve into the specifics of how skill education will be integrated into the curriculum for these grades and the NCERT textbooks that will be utilized.
Focus on Practical Skills
Teaching Essential Skills
CBSE's new directive includes teaching students practical skills such as plant and animal care, as well as basic engineering tasks.
Emphasis on Practical Knowledge
The primary goal of this initiative is to equip students with hands-on knowledge that complements their academic learning. CBSE schools will not only focus on theoretical subjects but also on real-world applications. An annual Skill Fair will be organized, allowing students to present their skill-based projects and experiences. This decision aligns with the objectives of the New Education Policy 2020.
Implementation of NCERT Books and Teacher Training
Utilization of NCERT's Skill Bodh Series
To facilitate skill education, CBSE will adopt the Skill Bodh series developed by NCERT, available in both print and digital formats. Additionally, teachers will undergo training to effectively deliver this new curriculum.
Weekly Instructional Periods
Students in grades 6 to 8 will have two dedicated periods each week for skill education, totaling 110 hours (or 160 periods) annually. Over the course of three years, students will be required to complete nine projects, which will involve 270 hours of practical work.
Evaluation of Skill Education
Separate Assessment Criteria
Skill education will be assessed independently. According to CBSE guidelines, the evaluation will consist of 10% for written exams, 10% for portfolios, 30% for presentations or viva, 30% for activity books, and 20% for teacher observations.
