IIT BHU Launches Innovative B.Tech Program in Physical AI for 2027-28
Introduction of a New B.Tech Program
Engineering students are set to benefit from a groundbreaking opportunity in Artificial Intelligence (AI) as the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) BHU gears up to introduce a four-year B.Tech program in 'Physical AI' starting in the academic year 2027-28. The establishment of a dedicated 'School of Physical AI' has received the green light.
Curriculum Overview
The program's curriculum will encompass various aspects such as robotics, sensor technology, machine control, and the practical applications of AI. Graduates can expect to find career opportunities in diverse sectors including industrial production, agriculture, healthcare, and space exploration.
Program Development Progress
Efforts are underway to launch the Physical AI program at IIT BHU. On October 17, the Senate of the institute approved the proposal for the new school. A coordination committee, consisting of eight members and led by Director Prof. Amit Patra, has been established to manage the school's formation and operations. Prof. Rajesh Kumar will act as the Vice-Chairperson of this committee.
Faculty Recruitment Initiatives
To ensure a high-quality educational experience, a faculty team is being assembled for the new school. Faculty members are currently visiting institutions in countries such as Poland and South Korea to create a strong academic foundation in this emerging field.
Understanding Physical AI
Physical AI represents a branch of artificial intelligence that merges computer technology with tangible machines and devices. By leveraging robots, sensors, cameras, and motors, it allows machines to interpret their environment and function accordingly. Unlike traditional AI, which focuses on digital data, Physical AI aims to enhance the intelligence of machines operating in the physical realm.
Curriculum Focus on Robotics and Machine Control
Expert committees are actively developing the curriculum for the four-year B.Tech program, which will include robotics, autonomous systems, sensor technology, machine control, and practical AI applications. Students will not only engage in programming but will also gain hands-on experience in designing, building, and testing machines, along with addressing real-world challenges.
Career Prospects in Various Industries
Pursuing a degree in Physical AI can lead to numerous career paths in fields such as robotics engineering, smart manufacturing, industrial automation, agricultural technology, healthcare, and space research. However, the availability of job opportunities will largely depend on the students' skills, knowledge, and the specific needs of the industry.
Establishment of the Fifth School at IIT BHU
The School of Physical AI will mark the fifth school established at IIT BHU, following the creation of schools focused on Biomedical Engineering, Biochemical Engineering, Decision Science, and Material Science. Additionally, IIT Kharagpur has also announced the formation of the Benjamin Gupta School of Physical AI, with a budget allocation of ₹35 crore on October 26.
