The Ministry of Finance's Department of Revenue has sanctioned the establishment of numerous new positions within the Enforcement Directorate (ED). This decision follows a long-awaited cadre review that has finally received approval.
In a significant move to enhance the ED's operational capabilities, the Central Government has authorized the creation of a substantial number of new roles. This initiative aims to bolster the agency's workforce from 2,000 to over 3,000 personnel, facilitating quicker resolutions of cases related to economic crimes, money laundering, and financial investigations.
Details of the New Recruitment
The revised organizational framework has led to a notable increase in positions, particularly in investigation-related roles. Key changes include:
- Additional Directors: Increased from 10 to 24
- Joint Directors: Increased from 28 to 49
- Deputy Directors: Increased from 148 to 267
- Assistant Directors: Increased from 255 to 531
- Enforcement Officers: Increased from 355 to 606
- Assistant Enforcement Officers: Increased from 425 to 803
Moreover, new positions have been added in the legal and technical departments, as well as within the Adjudication Wing, Systems Department, Ministerial Staff, and Security Branch. The increase in Senior Constable positions within the Security Department is also noteworthy. These enhancements are expected to significantly expedite investigations and related legal proceedings.
Understanding the Role of the ED
The Enforcement Directorate serves as a key investigative agency for the Government of India, focusing on money laundering, foreign exchange law violations, and significant economic offenses. Operating under the Department of Revenue in the Ministry of Finance, the ED possesses extensive powers, including conducting raids, interrogating suspects, seizing assets, and making arrests.
Key Recruitment Focus
The position of Assistant Enforcement Officer (AEO) is particularly prominent in the ED's recruitment efforts. This role is filled through the Staff Selection Commission's (SSC) CGL examination. Additionally, senior officers from IAS, IPS, and IRS services are often assigned to the ED. The recruitment process includes document verification after the Tier-1 and Tier-2 examinations of the SSC CGL, with successful candidates being appointed to various central departments, including the ED.
