NCERT Introduces Personal Income Tax in Class 9 Social Science Curriculum
Introduction of Personal Income Tax in Class 9
The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has incorporated personal income tax into the newly released Class 9 Social Science textbook. This addition aims to educate students on how to compute taxes according to the various slabs of the updated tax system.
New Textbooks Released
Recently, NCERT launched new textbooks for Class 9, following the earlier release of the Mathematics book. The Social Science textbook now provides students with insights into personal finance and income tax, complementing traditional subjects like Mathematics, Science, and Social Science. The latest edition includes a chapter titled "Managing Your Personal Finance," which stresses the significance of effective money management from a young age.
Understanding Tax Calculations
A notable aspect of this chapter is its focus on teaching Class 9 students how to perform actual tax calculations based on the new income tax slabs. NCERT chief Dinesh Prasad Saklani stated that this is the first instance of tax calculation being integrated into the curriculum for this age group. The textbook explains that income tax in India is determined using a slab system, providing a detailed table of the new tax regime's slabs and the methodology for calculating tax liabilities. Importantly, the chapter does not reference the previous tax regime, concentrating solely on the new system.
Taxation and Civic Responsibility
Tax Information Goes Beyond Just Calculation
The NCERT has expanded the scope of taxation education beyond mere calculations. The chapter connects tax payments to civic duties, teaching students that timely and honest tax payments are essential responsibilities of every citizen, contributing to national development. It also emphasizes the need to foster an understanding of money management from childhood, highlighting that financial management involves not just earning a substantial income but also making informed decisions about spending, saving, investing, risk management, responsible borrowing, and tax obligations.
Components of Personal Finance
Students will also learn about these aspects of personal finance
The chapter outlines various elements of personal finance under the "Pillars of Personal Finance," which include income, budgeting, saving, investing, and risk management. It underscores the importance of early investments and discusses various investment avenues such as fixed deposits, bonds, stocks, and mutual funds. The textbook asserts that the financial choices made today significantly influence future financial stability.
